The student affairs committee is busy planning a variety of activities for students and young professionals at NAOC V:

1. Media workshop - Tuesday, 14 August: "Getting the message out: How to communicate your research effectively through the media."  In this workshop, researchers will learn how to craft their message to elicit public interest, how to use the appropriate forms of media to communicate their message beyond the traditional academic community, and how to give effective interviews with journalists. Participation in this workshop will be limited to 50 participants, and is open to anyone but preference will be given to students and early career professionals. 2. Student-mentor lunch - Wednesday, 15 August: Students will be matched with mentors of their choice, to have a one-on-one sit-down lunch. 3. Student-Professional Dinner -  Friday, 17 August: Professionals and students will be grouped by research interest, and may network over a free Barbeque dinner! 4. Quiz Bowl - Friday, 17 August: Given the size of the conference and the number of people interested in participating in the quiz bowl, we are tweaking this year’s format to allow more teams to compete. Our goal is to start the contest off under 'pub-trivia' style rules, where any members of the audience can form a team of three participants. We will ask questions to the entire audience who will write down their answers and submit them. After a few rounds, the top-scoring teams will enter a Jeopardy- style round (same format as previous years), where they compete head-to-head for first, second, and third prizes. So, the only requirements for participating are that you show up, grab a team score sheet, and have a fun/unique team name.
